My fondest memory of Christmas, when I was a little girl back in the 1950s, is always if my grandparents' house. Christmas Eve every year, everyone went to church at midnight. Then family and friends would gather at the home of my Grandfather and Grandma Vensel on Garfield Street, West Kittanning. It was a time of food, fellowship, and music.
There was always so much love there and what fun we had. My uncle, Les Vensel, would usually be at the piano and the singing would go on all night. What a wonderful time. This tradition lasted many years before I was born and lasted until I was a young mother.
Sadly my grandparents both passed away in 1977, then one by one their children were gone. The only one left is my aunt Jeane Smart. She and I talk about these memories quite often and what a wonderful time that was. I'm very thankful I have this particular memory to share with my own grandchildren: a time when Christmas meant the birth of Jesus, the music and all the wonderful food. And of course, family and friends. These are memories I'll treasure forever.
