Sarah Jane Rich Allred
Sarah Jane Rich Allred, daughter of Elizabeth Stock and Hyrum S. Rich was born November 17, 1868 in Paris, Idaho. She was the oldest child in a family of twelve and a granddaughter of Apostle Charles C. Rich. In writing her story, Mrs Allred said, "I was born in a little two roomed house with a dirt roof. I can still remember this little two roomed house in Paris because after my birth I lived in it for nearly six years. When I was six we moved to Fish Haven and while there my father was the bishop of the ward and we were among the first settlers in Bear Lake Valley."
When she was 8 years old the family moved to St Charles where she attended her first school. At that time there were no note books and pencils as we have today but they copied work on slates with slate pencils. When the slate was full it was
erased and new work put on. The main subjects taught were reading, writing and arithmetic and all 8 grades were taught in one room by one teacher. There were no diplomas given when they graduated from the 8th grade and at that time there were no high schools to be attended. After graduation from the 8th grade they could not run to the city and find a job but the family worked together on the farm. After the grain was harvested and stacked in the field, they would go over the field gleaning the wheat, being careful to pick up every head they could find. They put them in a sack and at threshing time they would have it threshed and sell it to buy things they needed. Sarah Jane also picked peas to sell to help the family out.
