Dewitt was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Carroll County to William and Connie Welch. He grew up in Carroll County where he attended school. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of the American Legion, Forty & Eight and the American Red Cross. He was board president of the Washington County Park Commission and was founder of Dixie Youth Baseball League. He had been a resident of Greenville since 1951 where he was employed with Greenville Mill for 43 years as general manager until he retired in 1996. He then went to work with Mallette Furniture Company from 1997 to 2007. He was a member of Second Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Connie Welch; his son, David Stephen "Stevie" Welch; a sister, Bessie Cook Hancock; and three brothers, Rufus Welch, Herman "Watt" Welch and Albert Welch.
Dewitt was a loving husband and father and a good friend to all who knew him.
The family would like to extend their appreciation and special thanks to Chaplain Jeffery Murphy, Dr. Dale Hoekema, Dr. Baker, Dr. Sterling and all the staff members of the stroke unit at UMC.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Polly Welch of Greenville; two sons, Dewey Welch (Linda) of Greenville and Marty Welch of Vaiden; two daughters, Connie Shannon (Charles) of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Lisa of Greenville; two brothers, Vernon Welch (Maxine) and Dennis Welch (Frances "Bud"), both of Vaiden; five sisters, Martha Clarke (George) and Mildred Branch (Sonny), both of Winona, May Chiappeano of Smithtown, N.Y., Florine Williams (Kenneth) of Gulfport and Lorine Branch (Richard) of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; four grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Shana Foster (Jeff), Brandon Welch, Christopher Welch and Meghann Shannon; two great-grandchildren whom he also loved dearly, Dawson Foster and Grayson Foster; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 3 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home.
The Rev. Ronny Spivey will officiate the services.
