Her maiden name was Huffman and about 1900 the family changed it to Hoffman. Our ancestor that came over on the St Andrews in 1738 signed his name a Hofman. It was not the spelling that was so important but rather the dialect spoken . Since they could not speak English when they said their name the emphasis was on "Uff" so they recorded in once in America as it sounded, Huffman. For over 100 years our ancestors went by Huffman. it was not till around 1880 that some changed the spelling to Hoffman. Claudine's book states in John Walter Huffman Sr's bible he spelled it with a U. and years later the U when written was closed in to become Hoffman.
