He first married Nancy Ellen McMurdy about 1846. She was the daughter of George McMurdy and Polly Martin. Nancy was born in 1823 and died in 1853. James and Nancy had 3 children they named: George W, William John and Mary Elizabeth McFadden.
After Nancy's death in 1853 James married Sarah Ann Layton in 1857 in PA. They had 3 children they named Martin Perry, Edward and Nancy Ellen McFadden.
Some family records suggest there might have been a third spouse after 1885 when Sarah died named Adaline Beaver that didn't produce any children. In any case James who died in Mercer Township and Sarah now rest together in the Clintonville cemetery.

Jas McFadden died Feb. 28, 1901, aged 79 years. Sarah Ann his wife died Oct. 22, 1885, aged 55 years.
