John was the second of 7 children born to his parents Edward & Mary McFadden. By profession he was both a Millwright and a Carpenter.

He married Barbara Hoffman in October 20th, 1820 and they had 8 boys and 4 girls between 1822 and 1843. They named their child, in the order of their birth; James, Sarah Ann, Michael, John Layton, Daniel, Mary Ann, Philip Ghost, Perry Michael, Marjorie A, Jacob, Carlisle and Barbara McFadden.

John McFadden became the owner of 150 acres of land in Irwin Township, Venango Co., PA. At one point in time he relocated to Somerset, Perry Co., Ohio. Then in 1872 the citizens of West Middlesex boro, PA offered 10,000. cash and 5 acres of land to any Company to build a rolling mill. This offer was accepted by three Ohioans; B.F. Beach, John Windfield, and J.J. McFadden. The mill was known as the Wheeler Iron Works.

He and his wife Barbara returned to their farm in Irwin and they both died on this farm. His age at death was 82 years, 9 months and 11 days.
