John married Sarah "Jennie" Yard about 1847 in Venango Co., PA. Between 1852 and 1857 they had 4 children born in Venango Co., PA that they named: Catherine Emily, Benjamin Franklin, William J. and Thomas Jefferson McFadden.

After Sarah's death in 1859 John married Barbara Huffman on 1 Jan 1862 in Mediana, Medina Co., Ohio. They had one child they named: Henry Clay McFadden (b.1865, d.1938).

Their marriage was the second for both of them. Barbara had previously married Edwin Slaten on 14 Feb 1856 in Medina Co., Ohio. John & Barbara are buried together in the Spring Grove Cemetery.

There is some question about John's date of birth. His birth date of 9 Oct 1827 has him born just 215 days or 7 months & 5 days after his older brother Daniel who was born on 6 Apr 1827 per his gravestone inscription.
