Born Jacob Huffman in Scrubgrass Township (part that would later become Clinton Township), he was the sixth son and eighth child of James and Mary Ann Ghost Huffman. About 1846 he married Nancy Stewart and they became the parents of James G., Walter (who died in infancy), William Stewart and Emma Jane Hoffman. After Nancy's death, Jacob married Mary Galloway, a native of Ireland.
Most Huffmans in Venango County changed their name to it's proper spelling of Hoffman in the mid to late 1800s after decades of living with the fact that the English at the dock in Philadelphia on 28th Oct 1738, recorded it as our ancestors pronounced it - Huffman. Our Hoffman ancestors arrived with (their relatives) the Walter family on the ill-fated ship, "St Andrews".
