Margaret was 12 years old when her parents moved the family from Newton County, Texas, and settled in Polk County, Texas.
Margaret married Stephen Moses Oates on August 21, 1873, in Ollie Community, Polk Co., Texas. They were married in the home of Margaret's parents, and they were married by J. J. Rice, Elder.
On November 28, 1892, Margaret Wilson Oates, along with her four sisters, Elizabeth Josey, Olivia Oates, Jennie Waldrep, and Mary Oates, were deeded 300-acres of land in the Ollie Community of Polk County from their father, Rev. Frank Wilson. On Dec. 17, 1892, Stephen and Margaret Oates sold Margaret's interest in these 300-acres to her sister Jennie Wilson Waldrep and her husband, Rev. P. J. Waldrep.
Stephen and Margaret Oates were the parents of nine children; seven of which lived to maturity.
Margaret died at the age of 76 years at the home of her son, Bernard C. Oates.
Margaret was survived by her husband of 56 years; three sons, Bob, Ed, and Bernard Oates; two daughters, Pearl Oates Sheppard and Minnie Oates Alexander Davison; her 27 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; as well as two brothers, Frank M. Wilson of Leon County, Texas, and Ed H. Wilson of Chambers County, Texas; and two sisters, Elizabeth Wilson Josey and Jennie Wilson Waldrep of Polk County, Texas.

"Charlie" Oates in 1916; her daughter, Emmie Oates Shine in 1928; four grandchildren: Stephen, Margaret, and Mittie Sheppard and Stephen Howard Alexander; an infant great-granddaughter, Nelva Laverne Canon; a brother, William A. Wilson; and two sisters, Olivia Wilson Oates and Mary Wilson Oates.
