Ed Oates was the son of Stephen Moses Oates and Margaret Ann Wilson Oates.
Ed. never married. He lived with his sister Pearl Oates Sheppard in Polk County until her death.
He lived his last years with his nephew, W. W. "Bill" Oates and family on Day Lake near Dayton.
Ed Oates died in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.
OBITUARY: JOHN E. OATES
Funeral services for Mr. John E. Oates, 92, of Dayton, were held Wednesday, June 30, at 2 p.m. in the Sterling Funeral Chapel in Dayton with Rev. Harvey Neal and Rev. Forrest Wood officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Park Cemetery under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home, Inc. of Dayton. Mr. Oates was a native of Livingston, Texas, and had been a Dayton resident for 18 years. He was a member of the Oakdale Baptist Church of Marston, Texas. Mr. Oates was a retired farmer. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Minnie Alexander of Houston, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Louis Mosley, Ricky Short, Willie Killen, Fulton Jones, Al Landry and Van Zumwalt.

John E. "Uncle Ed" Oates was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen M. Oates and Margaret Wilson Oates; his brothers, Jesse Wyatt Oates, Robert F. "Bob" Oates, Walter Hubbard Oates, C. W. "Charlie" Oates, and Bernard C. Oates, Sr., and two sisters, Pearl Oates Sheppard and Emmie Oates Shine.
