Robert F. "Bob" Oates was the son of Stephen Moses Oates and Margaret Ann Wilson Oates.
Bob Oates married Sarah Arrilla Canon on Nov. 5, 1902, in Polk County, Texas. They were married by Rev. P. J. Waldrep, who was married to Bob's aunt, Virginia "Jennie" Wilson Waldrep.
They lived in Polk County until 1921 when they moved to Goose Creek in Harris County, and in Oct. of 1933, they moved to Dayton, in Liberty County. In 1938, Bob and Arrilla Oates moved to the Mudd Place on Day Lake near Dayton where Bob started a fishing and bait camp.
They were charter members of Shiloh Baptist Church in Cedar Bayou, Texas, which was organized on August 15, 1926, and of South Dayton Baptist near Dayton, which was organized on November 18, 1946. After Trinity Baptist Church in Dayton was organized in 1967, Bob and Arrilla Oates moved their church membership into Trinity Baptist as they had been living on Oakdale St. in Dayton since 1962.

OBITUARY FROM THE DAYTON NEWS: Robert Oates
Funeral services for Robert Franklin Oates, 92, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Sterling Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in Magnolia Park Cemetery.
He died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday in Dayton Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Livingston and had lived in Dayton for 37 years. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be Gene and Robert Pennington, Clinton Davidson, Arthur Oates, Joe Fondren and Joe Dove.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Sarah Canon Oates; one son, W. W. Oates, of Dayton; four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Pennington of Anahuac, Mrs. Grace Davidson of Manvel, Tex., Mrs. Jennie Fondren of Nederland and Mrs. Johnnie Robinson of Dayton; two brothers, B.C. Oates of Livingston and Ed Oates of Dayton; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Alexander of Houston; 27 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

"Bob" Oates was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen M. and Margaret Wilson Oates; his daughter, Annie Belle Oates Dahlquist in 1957; his son, Arthur Bernie Oates in 1960; his grandson, James Oscar Fondren in 1948; his sisters, Pearl Oates Sheppard and Emmie Oates Shine; and his brothers, Jesse Wyatt Oates, Walter Hubbard Oates, and C. W. "Charlie" Oates.
