George W. Welker, 71, of Kurreville died at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 18, 1940, at his home.

Mr. Welker was born March 5, 1869 in Arnsberg, the son of Benjamin and Louisa (Clay) Welker. He first married Marie Catherine Strueve on September 24, 1888 in Marble Hill. She preceded him in death on November 24, 1893. He later married Amanda F. "Fannie" (Bryan) Hunter on March 18, 1900 in Kurreville. Mr. Welker worked as a farmer for 56 years. He was a member of Old Salem Methodist Church in Millersville.

Surviving are his wife, Amanda; six sons, William (wife, Josephine) Welker, Lyman Welker and Leslie Lee Welker, all of Kurreville, Clarence (wife, Della) Welker and Fred (wife, Lizzie) Welker, both of Millersville, and Edward (wife, Bertha) Welker of Milton-Freewater, Oregon; six daughters, Mrs. Clara Gagnepain of Perryville, Mrs. Pinkston (Ella) Niswonger of Cape Girardeau, Mrs. John (Dessie) Newell and Ms. Ollie Welker, both of Kurreville, Mrs. John (Cloa) Klobe of Granite City, Illinois and Mrs. John (Jean) Schreiner of Jackson; one step-son, Charles Chester (wife, Clara) Hunter of St. Mary's Township; one brother, Charles (wife, Eva) Welker of Marble Hill; 27 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Otis Welker; two daughters, Sadie Welker and Connie Green; one grandson, Rusby Welker; one granddaughter, Barbara Klobe; two sisters, Cordella Welker and Mary Welker; and six brothers, Theodore Welker, John Welker, Thomas Welker, James Welker, Benjamin Alexander Welker and William Welker.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 1940, at Old Salem Methodist Church in Millersville. Burial followed in Old Salem Cemetery in Millersville. McCombs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
