The Montgomery County native and Winona resident was a member of Friendship Primitive Baptist Church and the Winona Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Leona Naron Garrett of Winona, a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Dismukes of Winona, a son, Tom Garrett of San Antonio, Texas, six sisters, Mrs. Bessie Henderson of Deland, Fla., Mrs. Ruby McKenzie and Mrs. Mildred Bawden, both of Mobile, Ala., Mrs. Mary Lee Hunt of Robertsdale, Ala., Mrs. Janett Zimmerlee of Decatur, Ala., and Mrs. Sara Dacus of Kilmichael, two brothers, William Garrett of West and Lewis Garrett of Semmes, Ala., and four grandchildren.
Memorial services were conducted from Oliver Funeral Home chapel at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28. The Rev. Jesse Phillipp, assisted by the Rev. Jimmy Latham preached. Internment was in Nations Poplar Creek Cemetery with Masonic rites.
Pallbearers were Grady Coleman, J.D. White, V.H. Boatman, Joe Applewhite, Thomas F. Garrett, Jr., and Denton Garrett. Honorary pallbearers were Luther Lamb, Brooks Parker, Rayford Patterson, Johnny Peacock, William Dismukes, Luther Ware, Spenser Wasson and Don Erkfitz. Oliver Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Barthal was the oldest of thirteen children born to John Joshua and Bettie Evans Garrett. Barthal married Esther Leona Naron on Nov. 29, 1933 in Webster County. They had the following children: Carolyn Lene (Dismukes), John Thomas "Tommy", and triplets Ted, Ned and Ed who died at birth.
