Virginia E. (Abbott) Whitlock, 83, St. Joseph, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at a St. Joseph hospital. Mrs. Whitlock had been the former manager of the Fabric Shop at East Hills Shopping Center until retiring.

Born in St. Joseph on Jan. 30, 1914, she was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph. She was a Christian. On Oct. 25, 1967, she married James Whitlock in St. Joseph. He survives the home. Mrs. Whitlock was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph A. and Genevieve Abbott; a brother, Joseph I. Abbott; and a sister, Clara Lippold.

Additonal survivors: a son, David L. Carpenter, Germany; a daughter, Iris E. Kerns, St. Joseph; three brothers, William J. Abbott, Omaha, Neb., Benjamin B. Abbott, Hamilton, Mo., and George W. Abbott, Chapman, Kan.; a sister, Genevieve B. Jackson, St. Joseph; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside service and burial: 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Mount Auburn Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 6 to 8 tonight, at the Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph.
