Jeremiah was the 7th of 12 children (5th son) born of Thomas Bartholomew (1788-1877) and the 2nd of 7 children born of his 2nd wife Sophia Jones (d. 1878). Jeremiah's siblings were: Annice (b. 1811), Harvey (1813-1869), Orange Adams (b. 1815), Samuel M. (1817-1909), Anna (1819-1849), Lucius (1820-1897), Marina (b. 1823), Hannah (b. 1828), William Saunders (b. 1830), Ira Wilson (1833-1923), and Cornelius (1835-1864).

Jeremiah married, in 1850, Altha Rainey (1820-1897) by whom he had 5 children (2 daughters and 3 sons): Mary (b. 1851), Henrietta (Hettie) (1852-1911), Cornellus (1854-1875), Eugene (b. 1856), and Frederick (b. 1858).

Jeremiah was long a resident in Whitehall, New York and Warrenville, Illinois. He moved to Richmond, Washington County, Iowa about 1856.
