Harvey was the 2nd of 5 children (1st son) born of Thomas Bartholomew (1788-1877) and his 1st wife Anna Foote (d. 1819) and the 2nd of 12 children born to Thomas in total. Harvey's siblings were: Annice (Annis) (1811-1895), Samuel M. (1817-1909), Orange Adams (b. 1815), Anna (1819-1849), Lucius (1820-1897), Jerry (b. 1822), Marina (b. 1823), Hannah (b. 1828), William Saunders (b. 1830), Ira Wilson (1833-1923), and Cornelius (1835-1864).

Harvey married, December 15, 1836, Hannah McFarren (b. 1818) by whom he had 10 children (4 sons and 6 daughters): David (b. 1838), Annis (b. 1840), Harvey (1842-1925), John (b. 1843), Hilliarn (b. 1847), Thomas M. (1849-1927), Annis (b. 1851), Clarissa A. (1856-1930), Allagustia (1858-1858), and Berthia (1862-1875).
