Lucius was the 6th of 12 children (4th son) born of Thomas Bartholomew (1788-1877) and the 1st of 7 children born of his 2nd wife Sophia Jones (d. 1878). Lucius's siblings were: Annice (b. 1811), Harvey (1813-1869), Orange Adams (b. 1815), Samuel M. (1817-1909), Anna (1819-1849), Jerry (b. 1822), Marina (b. 1823), Hannah (b. 1828), William Saunders (b. 1830), Ira Wilson (1833-1923), and Cornelius (1835-1864).

Lucius married Mary Graves (1827-1914) by whom he had 3 children (1 son and 2 daughters): Annis (Annice) E. (1848-1914), Phineas L. (1853-1947), and Minnie (Mary) (b. 1858).
