Mary was the 3rd of 11 children (2nd daughter) born of Phineas Graves (1800-1889) and his wife Anna Kendall (1805-1887). Mary's siblings were: Lucy Ann (1823-1902), Amos C. (1825-1901), Juliet, Betsey, Ellen S., Martha, Emma, Addison B., James D. (1835-1910), and A. Judson.

Mary married Lucius Bartholomew (1820-1897) by whom she had 3 children (1 son and 2 daughters): Annis (Annice) E. (1848-1914), Phineas L. (1853-1947), and Minnie (Mary) (b. 1858).
