Marinus married Johanna De Jonge also of Ovezande on 23 May 1873. Together they would have a total of 15 children.
Their first son was born in 1873 (Bastiaan), and after the birth of child no.8 in May 1881, they set sail for the US - destination: Appleton, Wisconsin.
They arrived at the port of New York, to Castle Garden (Pre-Ellis Island days) on 11 Jul 1881 aboard the SS Pollux, a masted steam ship from Amsterdam, operated by The Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot-Maatschappij (KNSM).
The family set up house in Appleton where they had 8 more children, with a total of 11 surviving to adult hood.
Shortly after arrival, Marinus 'Americanized his name to the simpler form of 'Martin'. He is often listed as 'Knight' rather than Knuijt, though he never legally changed his name. Some of his children or descendants later would do so.
Martin worked as a car smith and later as a flag man for the railroad. He passed away after attending church on 28 Jul 1912 at the age of 60 from heart failure or a heart attack.
(no existing photos of Martin, so have included his birth record from the Ovezande archives, as well as a photo of the SS Pollux, and possibly a photo of them all in front of the Knuijt house circa 1896)
