Harriet R Whitney was the daughter of C Marcus Gillett 1781 and Lucinda Manchester. She moved with her parents from Middlefield, Otsego County, New York to Mexico about 1837. There she married Henry Seymour Whitney, the son of Eliphalet Whitney and Lucy Aylesworth, on September 26, 1848.

The couple lived the rest of their lives in Mexico. They had children Carrie E (William) Tilton 1857 and Luly Whitney 1861-1864.
