Joe married the love of his life, Hellen Unruh, on August 7, 1960 and they raised four children together in Covington, Oklahoma. He continued to farm family land for many years, often accompanied and assisted by his sons until they moved away from home. In later years he also worked for the Johnston Seed Company and the Covington Livestock Auction. After retiring from farming he continued to work his other jobs until he was no longer able to. Joe enjoyed going to the Senior Center and local restaurants to visit with friends and community members as well as enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal, especially after the death of his wife.
When not busy farming, Joe enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved to fish and hunt. He was also an avid sports fan, with baseball being his favorite.
Joe was survived by two of his sons, daughters-in-law, several grandchildren, his brother and sister, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and many friends who will all miss him greatly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Hellen, his son John, his daughter Mary and extended family members.
