Alexander was a veteran of the Civil War. Enlisting in the 4th Alabama Infantry, he was standing within a few feet of Gen. Bernard E. Bee when Bee made his famous remark, "There stand Stonewall Jackson..." at the Battle of Manassas. Alexander's father John Simpson was the son of Irish Immigrants, Dr. William Simpson and Marguerite (McAlpine) Simpson. Dr. Simpson was a member of the United Irish and almost lost his head, had it not been for several supporters in County Londonderry. Instead of being hanged, he was banished from the United Kingdom and set sail for America. He was a good friend of Robert Emmet, Ireland's most famous patriot.
