She was born Aug. 10, 1907, in Lawsonville to the late El Canie and Sallie Shelton Sheppard.
Her childhood was spent in Lawsonville and Virginia. She moved to Winston-Salem in the 1920s to attend Draughon Business College and was later employed by Hall's Style Shop and the Winston-Salem Journal & Sentinel. For a number of years she was a full-time homemaker before returning to the work force with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools and later the Forsyth County Public Library on Fifth Street, retiring from the latter in 1972.
Frances was married to William Noah Ratterree for over 64 years until his death in 1990. She was a faithful and active member of Northwest Baptist Church for more than 70 years.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne R. Wright (widow of George Hudson Wright), of Winston-Salem and Susan R. Browning (husband Kenny Browning), of Durham; a son, William "Bill" Edward Ratterree, of Raleigh; eight grandchildren, Linda Wright Merchant (husband Paul Merchant) of Charlotte, Wayne L. Wright of Winston-Salem, Dr. Charles (Chuck) Thomas Browning (wife Angie) of Durham, John Browning of Wilmington, Joe Browning of Durham and Jason, Travis and Alex Ratterree of Raleigh; four great-grandchildren, Devin, Collin, and Erin Wright of Winston-Salem and Charles Thomas Browning Jr. of Durham; two step great-grandchildren, Betsy and Matthew Merchant of Charlotte; two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Shropshire of Ridgeway, Va., and Mrs. Jackie Crouch of Martinsville, Va.; a sister-in-law, Retta Sheppard, of Ridgeway, Va.; and 20 nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Forsyth Memorial Park. A service to celebrate the life of Frances Ratterree will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Northwest Baptist Church, 407 Petree Road with the Rev. Randy McKinney officiating. Visitation for family and friends will follow the service.
Memorials may be made to Northwest Baptist Church.
