24 MAY 1930 - PAGE 11 - MRS. AUGUSTA ARTS DEAD -OLD RESIDENCE OF CITY PASSES AWAY AT INDEPENDENCE. Mrs. Augusta Arts a resident of Marshalltown for thirty-nine years, died at 9 o'clock this morning at the state hospital at Independence, death being due to apoplexy. Mrs. Arts suffered an apoplectic stroke on May 20. Mrs. Arts was the mother of Mrs. Emil Seleine, of this city, and the death was the second in the family in a few days, Mr. Seleine's mother, Mrs. Charles Seleine, having passed away suddenly on May 12. Mrs. Arts was born Augusta Gauthier, in Jo Davis county, Illinois, May 24, 1844, and she passed away on the 80th anniversary of her birth. She was married to Henry Arts May 4, 1862. She came to Iowa forty-six years ago and had been a resident of Marshall county since, with her home in this city the last thirty-nine years. She was the mother of eleven daughters, seven of whom survive her. They are Mrs. Henry Kobbe , Porter, Minn.; Mrs. August Lang, Mrs. Emil Seleine, Mrs. Clyde Carpenter, Mrs. Frank Shaffer and Mrs. Bertha Jentzen of this city, and Mrs. Emma McDonald, of Des Moines. Forty-two grand-children also survive. Mr. Arts died here Aug 8, 1904. Mrs. Arts was the last surviving member of her father's family. She had always been a devout member of the Catholic church. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 Monday morning from St. Mary's church, in charge of Rev. William Leen. The body will be at the home of Mrs. Seleine until the hour of the funeral. Burial will be in Riverside.
