After three year of suffering from valvular heart disease and resulting dropsy, which had him in critical condition at times, this well known pioneer finished life's race yesterday afternoon. The last attack covered a period of only about four days, but frequent ones and the weight of his years had sapped his vitality until he was less able for the contest. Death occurred at his home, the long time Ed Guss farm, six miles north of Winamac. Mr. Guss was born in Union county, Penn., on Sept. 28, 1832, his age at death being 80 years, 5 months and 14 days. When he was eight years of age his parents Lewis Guss and wife , removed to Indiana and settled on what is still called the old Guss place, now the F. L. Dukes farm, two miles north of Winamac, and this county remained his home ever since--almost three-quarters of a century. In October of 1861 he was married, in this county to Miss Charlotte Coonfare. Eight children came to them, two of whom died when small, a son in his teens, and a daughter, Mrs. N. H. Freeman, at 28; the four living are daughters Mrs. Emma May Meyers of Culver and Mrs. Cora Belle Tennyson of Chicago, and sons George of Lawton, and William of Hammond. Mrs. Guss died in September of 1901, and on Dec. 24, 1906, Mr. Guss was married to Mrs. Dora Bailey, who survives him. Deceased leaves also sisters Mrs. Emma Weyand and Mrs. Jonas Hoover of Winamac and Mrs. Linda Davis of Ohio, and brothers Oliver of Kansas and Peter of this county; also 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and many acquaintances and friends. The funeral is to be held Friday at 2:30 pm from the Winamac Christian church, in charge of the Masonic Order of which he had long been a member. The sermon will be by Rev. E. Miller, and interment will be on the hill.
