Harry M. Sterner

Harry M. “Jim” Sterner, 88, of Glen Rock, passed away Thursday August, 21, 2014 at Manor Care Dallastown. He was the husband of the late Esther M. (Rohrbaugh) Sterner.
He was born in Codorus Township on December 30, 1925, a son of the late Harry E. and Treva (Meckley) Sterner.
Mr. Sterner proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II, in the South Pacific theater on the USS John Hancock aircraft carrier.
Upon returning home from the service in 1946, he and his father acquired a Texaco petroleum distributorship, providing petroleum energy needs for cars, farm, construction and marina vehicles, as well as home heating services, operating as H.E. Sterner and Sons in the Larue area of Glen Rock. In the early 1960’s, Harry’s brother, Jacob Sterner became a partner in the business and in 1980 they sold the business to Agway Energy Products.
He continued to be self employed, operating Sterner’s Heating and Plumbing Services and continued to offer a 24 hour petroleum fleet self-service dispensing service for Agway at the Larue location.
Mr. Sterner was a life long member of New Hope (Fissels) United Church of Christ, Glen Rock and enjoyed his favorite hobby of fixing and repairing various projects.
He is survived by two sons, Randy L. Sterner of Glen Rock and daughter in law, Donna Sterner; Lorie L Sterner and his wife Tina of Glen Rock, grandchildren, Brandon Sterner and wife Jamie, Cameron Sterner and wife Katlyn, Heather Evans, Kori Deller and husband Scott, and Marlayna Sterner; great grandchildren, Ashton and Lauren Deller and Jacoby and Easton Sterner; two sisters Hattie Small and Helen Watson, both of Glen Rock and a brother, Jacob Sterner of Seven Valleys. He was also predeceased by a sister, Goldie Henry and a brother Woodrow Sterner.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 23, 2014 at New Hope Fissel’s Church Cemetery, 3246 Fissel’s Church Road, Glen Rock, with his pastor the Rev. Julian E. Hall, officiating and a flag folding and taps, by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. There will be no viewing. The Geiple Funeral Home, Inc., 53 Main Street, Glen Rock is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope (Fissel’s) Church, P.O. Box 25, Glen Rock, PA 17327.
