Alexander Bowen was born 11 February 1855 in Bates Township, Scott County (now Sebastian County), Arkansas, the son of William Russ and Mary Ann "Polly" (Barnard) Bowen. He married Nancy J. Hall about 1873-74 in Arkansas. Alexander and Nancy were the parents of five children: Cain Harrison Bowen (1874-1937), Loulla Bowen Hull (1876-1953), Benjamin Franklin Bowen (1880-1930), Arthur D. Bowen (1882-1910), and William Russell Bowen (1884-?). About 1875, Alexander, Nancy, and their son Cain left Sebastian County, Arkansas for California. They first settled in Tulare County, California, near the home of Alexander's uncle, Ahab Bowen. Later they relocated to Bakersfield, Kern County, California. Alexander and Nancy divorced sometime before 1900. Alexander later moved to Contra Costa County, California, where he lived until his death on 05 August, 1939.

From Alexander Bowen's Obituary which appeared in the "San Francisco Chronicle," Tuesday, August 8, 1939, page 11 (left center of page under Obituary): Alexander Bowen was an 84-year-old Brooks Island caretaker. He died from pneumonia which resulted from his attempt, two weeks prior, to fight a brush fire on the island, which is located one mile out in the bay from Richmond, California. The fire burned all of the buildings on the island. (Bio by Rhetta)
