Thomas Elswick Field, born in Guilford County, NC, on 2 March 1843, and died in Hickory, Catawba Co., NC, on 17 Jan. 1912, buried at Oakwood Cemetery. (His tombstone has the wrong year for his death.) He was the sixth of eight children born to Elswick Sherwood Field (1808-1867) and his wife Guilianna Lindsay (1807-1885).

Thomas served in the Confederate Army; and, also (I think) in the Confederate Navy. After the War, he first lived at Kernersville, NC, but came to Hickory in 1870. On 23 Nov. 1875, he married Lillie Caroline Wilson (22 March 1857-29 Nov. 1937) a daughter of Harrison Wilson (1821-1886) and his wife Ann Shuford (1820-1901).

Thomas and Lillie had ten children: Annie Lois Field (6 Sept. 1877-9 March 1957, married Carlisle Loretz Marshall on 17 Oct. 1900, and went to Tennessee); Thomas W. Field (10 June 1878-6 Sept. 1885, bur. Old Hickory City Cemetery); Frances "Fannie" Field (31 Jan. 1882-3 May 1969, a school teacher, never married, bur. Oakwood Cemetery); Margaret Inez Field (21 June, 1884-26 July 1966, m. William Walter Keith, went to Georgia); Harry E. Field (7 Nov. 1884-3 June 1885, Old Hickory City Cem.); Sadie Field (24 May 1888-11 Nov. 1946, married William E. McRorie (1887-1930) c. 1910, bur. Oakwood); Lillian Field (3 Oct. 1890-4 March 1983, m. William H. Poe (1888-1964) in c.1910, lived & died at Johnson City, Tennessee, bur. Oakwood): Mary Beverly Field (16 Dec. 1891-6 June 1989, m. Horace B. Jones, went to Florida); John Sherwood Field (15 Jan. 1894-20 Nov. 1937, lived at Bradenton, Fla., bur. Oakwood); Hilda Field (3 March 1897-2 Jan. 1971, m. R. C. Buchanan c. 1918, bur. Oakwood).

Thomas E. Field had a younger brother, John Andrew Field (1846-1883,m. Mary Adeline Wilkinson), who was my 2nd great grandfather. I would love to have any information I could find on these folks.
