John Sherwood Field was the ninth of ten children born to Thomas Elswick Field (1843-1912), a Confederate veteran, and his wife Lillie Caroline Wilson (1856-1937). His paternal grandparents were Elswick Sherwood Field and his wife Guilianna Lindsay, and his maternal grandparents were Harrison Wilson and his wife Ann Shuford.

John was the only son to survive infancy. He went to Johnson City, Tennessee sometime in the 1910s to work for his brother in law Carlyle Marshall, and later went into the lumber business. He married Nelle B. Walker (1890-1970), of Tennessee, and they went to Bradenton, Florida in the 1920s. They didn't have any children.
