He spent his childhood in Greensboro, NC, and Gaston County, where his father built and ran cotton mills. He was living in Caldwell County, NC on 5 April 1868, when he married Amanda Roxanna Bisanar, daughter of Simon P. Bisanar and Rachel Starnes. They were living in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., by 1880, and Robert was running a hotel. In later years, he was a grocer and dry goods merchant. They had three children: Claudia Field (1869-1938, Mrs. J. F. Allen), Robert P. Field (1874-1932) and Henry L. Field (1886-1933). Funeral of Mr. Fields This Morning.
