Martha Eliza Field was the eldest daughter of Elswick S. Field and his wife Guilianna Lindsay. She was the first born of eight children. The inscription on her gravestone reads:

"MARTHA ELIZA

DAUGHTER OF

ELSWICK S. & GUILIAN L.

F I E L D

WHO DIED MARCH 8, 1844.

AGED 11 YEARS AND
21 DAYS

She hath gone to the land of delight,
Where the angels of paradise rove;
Where the pleasures forever are bright,
And the song is the rapture of love."

I just received a copy of an obituary printed for her in "The Greensboro Patriot," on April 6, 1844:

"Died, in this place on the 8th of March, Martha Eliza Field, eldest daughter of E. S. and G. L. Field, aged 11 years and 28 days. (note: disagrees with the tombstone.)

"She hath gone in the spring-time of life,
When the young heart was bouyant and light,
Ere earth with its sorrowing strife,
Had cast o'er her spirit a blight.

"She was wandering with hope through the bowers,
Where her footsteps delighted to stray;
But the spoiler had lurked 'mid the flowers,
And she passed in her gladness away!

"She hath gone to the land of delight,
Where the angels of paradise rove;
Where the pleasures forever are bright,
And the song is the rapture of love."
