William Howard Byrd was the son of Adolphus Byrd and Sarah Alice Lyle. He was named for his "Uncle Willie" Byrd. On March 23, 1933 in Chattanooga, Tennessee he married Rachel Muriel Dye, the daughter of Roy Alexander Dye and Leah Olive Lynch of Ohio. They had four children: Katherine Byrd, William Howard Byrd III (1937-2004), Richard Kenneth Byrd and Olive Jeanette Byrd. William Howard Byrd owned an insurance agency on Cherry Street, Chattanooga and then Life and Casualty Insurance on Fourth Street, Chattanooga. He preceded his wife in death.
