Leonard C. Pinson was born to Charles H. Pinson and Sarah Alice Rue Lyle. His father died six months after he was born. His mother married Adolphus Byrd in 1906 when Leonard was two years old but Adolphus died when Leonard was twelve. He and his younger siblings Wm. Howard Byrd and Mattie Louise Byrd were surrounded, however, by a large and close family in Chattanooga. Leonard and Gladys Earnestine Gouldy were married February 26, 1933 and had two daughters: Patricia and Sandra. After his death in 1963, Gladys married Robert A. Bell.
