Adolphus Byrd was born in Houston, Harris County, Texas to Daniel Felix Byrd and Sarah Jane Ward Byrd. He was orphaned with his brother William Howard Byrd when their home in Fort Bend County, Texas burned. The brothers were sent to an orphanage and William Howard Byrd was adopted, but Adolphus was not. When he was old enough, Adolphus began his search for his Alabama family and at age 20 in 1898, Montgomery, Alabama enlisted in the U.S. Army 8th Regiment, Co G. He was stationed in Cuba during the Spanish American War, and was discharged in Nagasake, Japan November 3, 1901 as a Private with an excellent record. He married the widowed Sarah Alice Rue (Lyle) Pinson in Chattanooga September 9, 1906 and they had two children: William Howard Byrd II (1909-1965) and Mattie Louise Byrd Autry (1912-1998). He was finally reunited with his brother in Chattanooga 1910. Adolphus Byrd died 1916 of tuberculosis, and William Howard Byrd moved back to Chattanooga after the death of his wife and is buried next to his brother.
