William Thomas "Tom" Herbert was born on Feb. 9, 1866 in rural southwestern Jefferson Co., Kentucky, the son of Johann Adam Herbert (1815-1893) and Frances Osborne (1824-1906).

Tom's father, Adam, was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria (1806-1918), now Germany's largest state. Tom's mother, Frances, was born in Bullitt Co., KY. Both are buried in the Herbert Family Cemetery located on present day Arnoldtown Road/3rd Street Road in Jefferson County, once part of their farm.

On Feb. 28, 1893, Tom married Rosa "Rosie" Horn (1868-1941). He was 27 years of age, she 25. Rosie was born in SW Jefferson Co., KY, the daughter of German immigrants, Michael "Mike" Horn (1932-1905) and Elisabetha "Elizabeth" Pfister (1838-1922). Rosie's parents had migrated to America in 1855 (Baden) and 1853 (Bavaria) respectively. They are buried in the Risinger Cemetery in Jefferson County. Their farm was located on Bear Creek road, next to the cemetery.

Tom and Rosie were married for about 48 years and had eight known children. They are listed in Rosie's memorial.

Rose died on Aug. 30, 1941 in Jefferson Co., KY at the age of 71. She is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson County. Tom died on Apr. 28, 1948 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY at the age of 82. He too, is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, next to his wife, Rosie.
