Rose "Rosie" Horn was born on Nov. 17, 1869 (according to her headstone) in southwestern Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Her death certificate, with information supplied by her husband, shows her as having been born on Nov. 17, 1868. Censuses show 1868 or 1869. She was the daughter of Michael "Mike" Horn (1832-1905) and Elisabetha "Elizabeth" Pfister (1838-1922), the fifth of their thirteen known children.
Rosie's father, Michael, was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden (1806-1918), probably in/near the little town of Obrigheim. A Duchy was a territory ruled by a Duke or Duchess. Michael came to America in 1854 at the age of 22. Rosie's mother, Elisabeth, was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria (1806-1918), now Germany's largest state. She arrived in America in 1853 at the age of 14.
Rosie's parents were married on Jan. 6, 1859 in Jefferson Co., KY, and lived much of their married life on/near Bear Camp Road. They are buried side-by-side in the Risinger Cemetery with an open Bible atop each of their headstones. Their farm adjoined the cemetery, the farm that Rose would have been raised on.
On Feb. 28, 1893, Rosie married William Thomas "Tom" Herbert (1866-1948) in Jefferson Co., KY. He was 27 years of age, she 25. Tom was born in Jefferson County, the son of Johann Adam Herbert (1815-1893) and Frances Osborne (1824-1906). Adam was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Frances in Bullitt Co., KY.
Rosie and William were married for about 48 years and had eight known children. They were Stella Herbert (1893-1961), Elizabeth Etta "Lizzie" Herbert (1897-1959), Frances Amelia Herbert (1899-1960), Evelyn Marie Herbert (1903-1952), Rose A. Herbert (1904-1983), Fred C. Herbert (1906-1984), Dorothy M. Herbert (1912-2001) and George T. Herbert (1915-2000). All were born in SW Jefferson Co., KY.
Rosie died on Aug. 30, 1941 in Jefferson Co., KY at the age of 71. Her death certificate shows her death was due to apoplexy and hypertension. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Rosie's husband, William, died on Apr. 28, 1948 at the age of 82, also in Jefferson County. He too, is buried in Evergreen, next to his wife, Rosie.
