Johann Adam Herbert was born on Mar. 6, 1815 in the Kingdom of Bavaria, currently Germany's largest state. His 1839 marriage record shows his first name as John (most likely Johann) and gives his middle initial as "A". His parents are currently unknown. It is thought that he immigrated to America without them.

On Oct. 14, 1839, in Bullitt Co., KY, Adam married Frances Osborne (1824-1906). He was 24, she just 15. She was born in Bullitt Co., KY but her parents are currently uncertain.

Adam, a life-long farmer, and Frances were married for about 67 years and had nine known children. They were Mary Ann Herbert (1840-1891), George B. Herbert (1842-1927), Jacob Herbert (1845-1911), Frances Jane Herbert (1848-1869), Henry Herbert (1854-1927), Sarah C. Herbert (1858- ?), Eliza B. Herbert (1860-1897), Mahala E. Herbert (1863-1898) and William Thomas "Tom" Herbert (1866-1948). All were born in SW Jefferson Co., KY.

Adam died on June 2, 1893 in Jefferson County at the age of 78. He is buried in the Herbert Family Cemetery located on present day Arnoldtown Road at Third Street Road. The cemetery was once a part of the Herbert family farm. He is often confused with Adam A. Herbert (1867-1893) who lived in Louisville and is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery. Both died in 1893.

Frances died on Sept. 13, 1906 in Jefferson County at the age of 82. She too, is buried in the Herbert Family Cemetery, next to her husband, Adam.

Inscription

Farewell my friends, wife and children all,
From you a husband and father Christ doth call.
Mourn not for me, it is vain
To call me to your sight again.
