Frances Jane Herbert was born on Jan. 27, 1848 in SW Jefferson Co., Kentucky. She was the daughter of Johann Adam Herbert (1815-1895) and Frances J. Osborne (1824-1906), both of whom died in Jefferson Co., KY and are buried there in the Herbert Family Cemetery.

Frances' father, Adam, was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria (1806-1918), now Germany's largest state. He is thought to have come to America as a young man without his currently unknown parents. Frances' unknown mother was born in Bullitt Co., KY.

On Sept. 20, 1866, in Jefferson Co., KY, Frances married Johann Fey (1844-1916). John was 22, Frances 18. John was the first of five children born to Bavarian immigrants, Johann "John" Fey (1816-1905) and Dorothea "Dorothy" Quillman (1822-1857). Johann had traveled to America with the Quillman family, arriving in 1840. They soon settled in SW Jefferson Co., KY. John's mother, Dorothy, died when he was only 12.

John and Frances were married for less the three years. She died on Apr. 2, 1869 in Jefferson Co., KY, at the young age of 21. Frances is buried in the Herbert Family Cemetery. During their short marriage, Frances and John had one child, Jacob Fey (1867-1887). He also died young, at the age of 19, and is also thought to be buried in the Herbert Family Cemetery.

Frances died on Apr. 2, 1869 in Jefferson County at the age of 21. She is buried in the Herbert Family Cemetery located on their family farm which was located on present day Arnoldtown Road at 3rd Street Road.

John lost his mother, Dorothea, when he was only 12. His wife, Frances, died when she was only 21 and his only child by her, Jacob, died when he was only 19.

Frances' husband, John (25) remarried in 1870, to Mary Short (abt 1848-1871/73). Almost nothing is known about her. The 1870 census shows a her as an immigrant (Germanic) from Switzerland. She too, died young, about the age of 23-25. She is thought to have died between 1871-73 and to be buried in the Fey Family Cemetery located on the old Fey family farm (Windsor Lake Subdivision) off present day Arnoldtown Road.

Once again, Frances's husband, remarried. This time in 1874, to Ellen Elizabeth Weems (1854-1823). John was 29, Ellen 19. They would have three known children.

John died on Oct. 7, 1916 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY, at the age of 72. His KY Death Certificate shows the cause of death as pneumonia. He is buried in the Portland Cemetery, next to his third wife, Elizabeth.
