Walter J. Schuetz
Hiawatha-Walter J. Schuetz, 80, formerly of Hiawatha, died early Thursday, Jan. 3, at a Topeka hospital. He was hospitalized after he suffered a heart attack a week ago at the home of a son.
Mr. Schuetz was a car salesman or Frank Sterns in Hiawatha many years. He later owned and operated the Pontiac-Cadillac automobile dealership in Hiawatha from 1941 until he sold the dealership and retired in 1967.
He was born Feb. 29, 1904 at Germantown(renamed Mercier) in Brown County, the son of Edward and Oda Dorei Schuetz and lived in northeast Kansas all his life.
Mr. Schuetz was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1741, all at Hiawatha.
His wife, Mrs. Elsie Lathrop Schuetz, survives.
Other survivors include a son, Jerry Schuetz, Overland Park; four sisters, Mrs. Thelma McClaskey and Mrs. Wilma Winkelbauer, both of Horton, Mrs. Phyllis Sturm, Denton, and Mrs. Patricia Christie, Topeka; two brothers, Floyd Schuetz, Horton, and Ralph Schuetz, Hiawatha; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's Catholic Church here. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Hiawatha. A parish wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Casselman-Meek Funeral Home here where memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
