Never Married

David Shatto was one of 10 children, not all of whom survived to adulthood. His parents had started their married lives in Kansas, came to Oregon in the early 1890's and by 1899 were in Santa Clara, California, where he was born.

David lost his mother at age 9 and was living with his father and brother Francis in Vallejo in 1910 - the other children dispersed out to relatives.

David, like many of his siblings, was very bright and developed an interest in chemistry, at which he excelled. He worked as a mechanic and electrician at various points while attending UC Berkeley and graduated with a chemistry degree. He is found working with various companies and labs in California and other states the rest of his life.

He came to hold outspoken radical left wing views. Ironically he started off a registered Republican and switched to Democrat by the early 1930's - neither one reflecting his political ideology. Although his research led to important discoveries and products, his personal life was very rocky. He ran into many problems holding steady employment, due to an off-putting outspoken style to any topic under discussion and his political views. He is found in the San Francisco-Berkeley area, southern California and Colorado at various points in his career.
