He adopted a young girl by the name of Bobbie after Elaine died.

He was the second child born to his parents in Oregon after the exodus of allied families to the west coast from Linn, Kansas. He lived a short while with relatives in Sebastopol, California, while a teenager. Like a number of his Sonoma County male relatives he was a building contractor. He and Elaine lived variously in Rio Nido, Guerneville and on Guerneville Road just outside Santa Rosa where he was struck down and killed by a car while crossing the road to his mailbox.

He was a WWI Navy veteran, enlisting 7 November 1917 and discharged 30 September 1921.

"SHATTO - In Santa Rosa, Calif., March 8, 1980. John (Jack) Shatto, adored husband of the late Elaine Shatto, loving father of Bobbie Shatto of Santa Rosa, brother of Marion Murray of Alameda and Marjorie Ruyle of Concord. A native of Oregon, age 86 years. A member of Mt. Jackson Lodge No. 295, F&AM, Guerneville, Guerneville Rotary Club and the Russian River Sportsman's Club.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services on Tuesday, March 11, 1980 at 1:30 p.m. at the Eggen and Lance Mortuary. Officers of Mt. Jackson Lodge, No. 295 F&AM officiating. Private interment at Santa Rosa Memorial Park. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 1701 19th Ave., San Francisco, 94122."
