Final rites for Alpheus James Batman, 87 years, 11 months and 9 days, of Marengo, were held Thursday, August 6, 1959, at 2 p.m. at Swarens Funeral Home in Marengo,
The Rev. August Huber, pastor of the Marengo Methodist Church, officiated. Interment was in the Marengo Cemetery.
Mr. Batman died Monday, 8:45 p.m., August 3, 1959, at his home in Marengo, He had been critically ill since returning home 10 days ago from the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in New Albany, where he had undergone surgery.
For 55 years he had been in the hardware business when he went in partnership with the late Paris Franklin Wood in 1903. When he was a young man, Mr. Batman drove a wagon throughout Crawford County, buying and selling produce.
He was a lifelong resident of Crawford County and was a member and trustee of the Marengo Methodist Church.
He was the son of the late Henry Samuel & Mariah W. Landiss Batman, born August 20, 1871. He had a twin sister, Alice Jane Coleman, she preceded him in death.
He was united in marriage to Harriet Rachel Weathers, the daughter of James H. and Martha E. Wood Weathers, in Marengo on December 24, 1901, she preceded him in death Sept. 4, 1953.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Leroy (Oneida)Rupert, of Pomona, Calif., a son Robert Sheldon Batman, his business associate, of Marengo; a sister, Mrs. Cora Lambdin Coleman, of Oakley, Calif.; two granddaughters, Mrs. John I.(Sara) Combs and Miss Jane Batman; three great-grandchildren, Laura Jane, Karen Murlene and Jon Robert Combs, of Marengo.
