Funeral rites for John Damme, 64, were held last Monday afternoon in St. Paul's Lutheran church with Rev. H. M. Hilpert officiating. Mr. Damme died Dec. 27 at his home following a lingering illness. The church choir sang two hymns with Karen Ehlers as organist. Pallbearers were Warren Damme, Melvin and Elmer Baker, Carl and Alvin Ehlers and John Beuthien. Burial was in the Pleasant View cemetery.
John Herman Damme, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Damme, was born Sept. 11, 1893 on a farm southeast of Wayne. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. May 23, 1917 he married Martha Ehlers. Three children, one dying in infancy, were born to them. Mr. Damme farmed in the Wayne-Winside vicinity until 1928 when the family moved to Sidney, and remained there until 1935.
They returned to Winside and farmed until 1950 when he retired and moved to Carroll. In 1951 they moved back to Winside and he entered the tavern business, which he continued to operate until his death. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church.
He is survived by his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Wilfred Lenzen, St. James, Minn.; one son, William, Winside; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. William Schroeder, Wayne, and Mrs. Hans Henricksen, Pierre, S.D., and four brothers, Fred, Winside, and Edward, Carl and Albert, Wayne.
