Brown Stewart was the son of John William "Bill" and Susan Samirania Woods Stewart. He was born in McNairy County, Tennessee and was the oldest of the children born to his parents however he had an older sister Nona born to his father and his second wife Malissa Shelton. Nona was only a toddler when her mother was killed in a buggy accident. Less than two years after Brown's birth the family grew by James Elred, 1874; Woods, 1876 but he died in 1876 and then another sister Ossyth Mae, aka Ossie, then Winston, Donald H and Kennon came along. Although all the children were born in McNairy County, Tennessee their father worked for the Southern Railroad and his job eventually took him to Mississippi and sometime thereafter the family moved to Alcorn Mississippi. Brown married Mary Frances "Fannie" Surratt on February 28, 1913 and they began their family very shortley after with their son Call Stewart being born on November 4, 1913. Next came Walter Erskine in 1915, Ketchum in 1916, William Robert in 1918, and then the family lost Call in 1920 but added Geonettie in 1920 only to loose her in 1921. Again in 1921 John Morgan was born and Myra Sue in 1924 and Mary Nell in 1927. Going back to 1918 Brown, age 36 had to register in McNairy, Tennessee for the WWI draft, but gives his permanent address as Wennasoga, Alcorn County, Mississippi. He also gives his wife Fannie as his nearest relative and her address is also listed as Wennasoga, Alcorn County, Mississippi. Unlike most of his brothers who followed their dad by working on the railroad, Brown is listed as a farmer on his own account, meaning he worked for himself. Confusing as it is the 1920 McNairy County, Tennessee census shows the family living in the Civil District 14...he is 39, Fannie is 31, the census was taken before the death of their sons Call and Ketchum... Call who is 6, Erskine is 4, Ketchum 3, and William 1. Brown's father had passed away in 1918 and now his widowed mother Susan age 70 is living with them. Three years is a row Fannie and Brown Stewart buried 3 small children in Holly Cemetery, Call was 6 when he passed in 1920, Geonettie was around 1 when she passed in 1921 and Ketchum was about 6 in 1922 when he passed. Unless a death cert is found it is not known as to what happened to these children. Their other five children lived to adulthood. The 1930 Alcorn, Mississippi finds the family living on Wennesoga Road where Brown is a farmer doing general farm work on his own account. Fannie is keeping house, 15 year old Erskine and 12 year old William help dad on the farm and Morgan 9, Myra S 6, do what they can to help mom with little sister Mary Nell who is 3 and small chores around the house. The 1940 census from Alcorn, Mississippi shows the family living in the same place as 1935, probably the farm on Wennesoga Road they were living on in the 1930 census. Brown is still farming, it shows that Fannie and he have an 8th grade education and Morgan now 18, Myra 16, and Mary Nell 13 are still living at home. Brown passed in 1967 leaving Fannie to live on until her death in 1976..
