Mary Adeline Wilkinson was fourth of six children and 2nd daughter of William Wilkinson (c. 1816-bef.1860, son of William Wilkinson and Lucy Reeves) and Mary Amanda DeWeese (20 Jan. 1824 - 16 August 1851, a daughter of Jonathan DeWeese and Margaret Boyd Irvin). William and Mary Amanda were married in Mecklenburg County, NC, where the DeWeese family was from, in 1841, but moved to McDowell County, NC around 1845. After Mary Amanda's death, William went back to Mecklenburg, and married her younger sister, Nancy Adeline DeWeese (1827-1862). There were three children born of this marriage, Emily (c.1854), Lucy (c.1855) and Cornelia Reeves Wilkinson (c.1857-1933, Mrs. John T. Barber). The family lived in South Carolina for a time. William Wilkinson apparently died before 1860, and his widow Nancy, and 8 children, along with their Nancy's widowed mother, Margaret Boyd Irvin DeWeese, were living at Mountain Island, Gaston Co., NC in 1860.

Mary Adeline was the great granddaughter of Hezekiah DeWeese (1760-1839), a soldier of the Revolution. The DeWeese family was from the Netherlands. They came to New York in the 1660s, went to Delaware in the early 1700s, and came to NC in 1772. Hezekiah's wife, Annis Trickey (1767-1844) was a daughter of Giles Trickey (1731-1802) who came from the village of Broadclyst, Devon, England, to NC in the 1760s. The Wilkinsons were presumably Scottish. The Reeves family may have been of French ancestry. William Wilkinson, Sr. was probaly a son of Samuel Wilkinson and Esther McBride, who were married in Rowan Co. NC, in 1783.

Mary Adeline Wilkinson married John Andrew Field (1846-1883, a son of Elswick S. Field and Guilianna L. Lindsay) on 26 Oct. 1865 in Gaston County, NC. They were living in the DeWeese section of Cabarrus County by 1870. (Evidently there were adjoining districts called DeWeese, one in Cabarrus and one in Mecklenburg Counties, named for her ancestors.)

Mary Adeline and John Andrew Field had six children: Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902, m. Mary Rhetta Bell), Elizabeth Lavinia Field (1870-1833, m. John Sloan Hill), Charles Presley Field (1872-1924, m. Ila Juanita Hill), Mary E. Lindsay Field (1874-1875), John Elswick Field (1877-1956, m. Marian) and Lewis Edgar Field (1882-1943, m. Mable Shreve).

Mary Adeline died at the home of her son, John Elswick Field, in Hudson, Caldwell County, NC, and her remains were brought back for burial at Coddle Creek, to rest beside her husband and baby daughter who died, and near one of her sons, Ernest Marion Field, who had predeceased her.
