Charles Pressly Field was the second son and third of six children born to John Andrew Field (1846-1883) and his wife Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906), of Cabarrus County, North Carolina. His paternal grandparents were Elsiwck Sherwood Field and his wife Guilianna L. Lindsay, originally grom Guilford Co., and his maternal grandparents were William R. Wilkinson and his wife Mary Amanda DeWeese of Mecklenburg Co., NC.
Charles married Ila Juanita Hill (1872-1954) on 13 June 1893. She was a daughter of John Robert Lawson Hill and his wife Harriet Belzora Sloan. Ila's brother, John Hill, had married Charles' sister, Elizabeth Lavinia Field.
After the death of their first child, and due to the chronic illness of their second, they took a doctor's advice and moved to Florida in hopes that the climate would improve their daughter's health. (It did.) Charles' younger brothers, John and Louis, eventually joined them in Florida.
Charles invested in orange groves. At one point, he opened an early moving picture theater (in a rebuilt barn). And he began manufacturing automobiles and busses. According to his granddaughter, he invented a gasoline gauge, the first for measuring how much gas was in the tank. Some of the large automobile manufacturers up in Detroit heard of his inventions and inovations and asked him to come up there and discuss going to work for them. Unfortunately, he died suddenly on the trip to Detroit, and was buried up there. I am afraid I do not know exactly where.
Charles and Ila had five children: Hary Field (16 Nov. 1894-28 Aug. 1896) bur. Coddle Creek, Frances Cornelia Field (29 Dec. 1897-1984), Ruth Louise Field (23 March 1900-26 March 1993, Mrs Tracy Tuttle), Hilda Field (21 Feb. 1903-15 Nov. 1985, Mrs. John A. Baldwin), Margaret J. Field (23 Sept 1907-13 Jan 1989, Mrs. Paul A, Winton).
