Elizabeth Lavinia Field was the first daughter, and second of six children born to John Andrew Field (1846-1883) and his wife Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906) of Coddle Creek, NC. Her paternal grandparents were Elswick Sherwood Field and Guilianna Lindsay; and her maternal grandparents were William R. Wilkinson and Mary Amanda DeWeese.

Her siblings were Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902, great grandfather of the writer), Charles Presley Field (1872-1924), Mary E. Lindsay Field (1874-1875), John Elswick Field (1877-1959) and Lewis Edgar Field (1882-1943). Her parents and siblings are buried at Coddle Creek Church, except for John E. who was buried in Florida, and Lewis who was buried in this cemetery.

Elizabeth married John Sloan Hill (1859-1924, a son of James R. L. Hill and Harriet B. Sloan) c. 1888. They had five children: Bertha Hill (born 30 April 1890), Floyd Hill (born Dec. 1892, died before 1910), Mary Buena Hill (1894-1968), a child who was born & died before 1900 (per the 1900 census) and James Conrad Hill (1901-1956).
