Louis Edgar Field was the youngest of six children born to John Andrew Field (1846-1883) and his wife Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906). He went to Florida with two of his brothers, Charles Presley Field (1872-1924) and John Elswick Field (1877-1959), in the early 1900s.

Louis married Mabel Minerva Shreve (1883-1965) on 11 May 1910, in Volusia County, Florida. She was a daughter of James Orsen Shreve and his wife Mary Hunt. Louis' brother John married Mable's sister Lillian B. Shreve that October, but she died sometime before 1920.

Louis and Mabel were living in DeLand, Volusia Co., Florida in 1910 and 1920. By 1930, they'd moved to Fort Myers, Lee Co., Fla. They were still in Fort Myers in 1935, but evidently came back to North Carolina simetime before 1940. They lived at Kannappolis, Cabarrus Co., NC.

Louis and Mabel had two sons Robert Edgar Field (2 Feb. 1911, was living in Kannapolis in 1986) and Louis Wilkinson Field (30 June 1916-24 April 1999, d. Lakeland, Polk County, Florida).
