Minister Succumbs

Rev. Wiley Edmond Turner, 85, of Sloan's Mill community, route 2, Hamptonville, died Friday at 12:30 a.m. in Davis Hospital. Death was unexpected.

He was born in Wilkes County on Aug. 18, 1888, and was the son of the late Wilborn and Mary Pennix Turner. He was a retired farmer and minister. and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school superintendent and teacher.

On Jan. 1 1909, he was married to the former Julia Hayes, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by eight sons, J. Edgar Turner, route 2, Harmony, Commie W. Turner, route 1, Hamptonville, Frank E. Turner, E. Broad St., Statesville, W. Carl Turner, route 1, Hamptonville, Thurman R. Turner of State Road, Marvin C. Turner, Lee Roy Turner and Paris Vernon Turner, all of route 2, Hamptonville; one daughter, Mrs. Roy ( Ethel Mae) Gilleland, route 1, Maiden; one sister, Mrs. Arvie Bell, route 2, Hamptonville; two brothers, Paris Turner of Miller's Creek, and Simmeon Turner of Hebren Springs, Ark; 30 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Turner will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, with Rev. J. Wade Chappell, Rev. David Curman Sprinkle and Rev. Paul E. Moore officiating.

The body will be taken from Reavis Funeral Home in Harmony to the residence at 5 p.m. Saturday, and the family will receive friends at the home.

The body will lie in state in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral hours.
