HAMPTONVILLE -

Mr. William "Carl" Turner, 88, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Elkin Healthcare Center. Mr. Turner was born May 1, 1916, in Wilkes County to Wiley E. and Julie Ann Hayes Turner. He was a retired carpenter and farmer. Mr. Turner was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for more than 50 years and was head of the Cemetery Committee for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Thurman, Edgar, Comie and Frank Turner. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Stella Lee Talley Turner, of the home; four children, Billy Gray (Betty) Turner of Tobaccoville, Lyndon Carl (Debbie) Turner of Union Grove, Betty Sue (Wendell) Norman of Jonesville and Mary (Tony) Chambers of Hamptonville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Mae Gilleland, of Conover; and three brothers, the Rev. Marvin Turner, the Rev. Roy Turner and the Rev. Vernon Turner, all of Hamptonville. The Turner family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at New Hope Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Andrews, the Rev. Jerry Yarboro and the Rev. Roy Turner. Mr. Turner will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
